Bournemouth in Dorset is the happiest place in the UK, a First Direct survey has discovered.

The poll of 6,000 adults revealed that 82 per cent of people living in the seaside town were happy.

The unhappiest place was Walsall in the Midlands, where just 49 per cent of the population said they were happy.

Llandudno was the happiest town in Wales and second in the UK, while Glasgow was the top place in Scotland and 17th overall.

Cllr Ron Whittaker: "Bournemouth is a beautiful place. In my mind, the Stour Valley is the jewel in its crown."

Other happy places in the UK included Tunbridge Wells, Oxford, Taunton and Gloucester.

"Bournemouth's success is built upon giving everyone a happy experience in the resort, whether they are lucky enough to live here, or are only able to visit for a short time," said Mark Smith, head of tourism at Bournemouth County Council.

"We are delighted that local people appreciate and are justifiably proud of the town, but we are not resting on our 'happy' laurels and are continuing to invest heavily to make Bournemouth even more fun in the future."

Cllr Ron Whittaker added: "Bournemouth is a beautiful place. In my mind, the Stour Valley is the jewel in its crown.

"However, high density developments, encroaching on our green belt, and increasing traffic could create unhappiness for future generations."

Bournemouth scored highly on personal freedom, people's fulfillment at work, character, access to countryside and quality of beaches.

Relationships with partners, friends and family were also considered important by survey participants.

First direct marketing boss Mark Mullen said: "Those closest to us have the greatest power to make us happy but it seems that where you live can also have a substantial impact on your overall happiness."
